With “4” in its name, you might expect 4Runner to be available with 4-Wheel Drive. In fact, you can choose from two different systems. SR5 4WD and Trail models utilize part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), while Limited 4WD is equipped with a full-time system featuring A-TRAC and a Torsen® 12 limited-slip center differential with locking feature.

Part-time 4WD

If you consider yourself a purist, consider 4Runner’s part-time 4WD system. It features a traditional transfer case lever to select high range 2WD/4WD or low range 4WD.

KDSS

Available on 4Runner Trail, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) employs a unique hydraulic system that automatically adjusts suspension performance for the conditions at hand. On road, it reduces body roll for improved handling. Off-road, it simulates disengaging the stabilizer bars for increased wheel articulation on uneven terrain.
