4WD Systems

4WD systems

With “4” in its name, you might expect 4Runner to be available with 4-Wheel Drive. In fact, you can choose from two different systems. SR5 4WD and Trail models utilize part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), while Limited 4WD is equipped with a full-time system featuring A-TRAC and a Torsen^® ¹² limited-slip center differential with locking feature.

Part-time 4WD

If you consider yourself a purist, consider 4Runner’s part-time 4WD system. It features a traditional transfer case lever to select high range 2WD/4WD or low range 4WD.

Full-time 4WD

Though 4Runner Limited’s available full-time 4WD system is always on, you can still select between high and low ranges with the simple turn of a dial.

Locking rear differential

4Runner Trail comes standard with an electronically locking rear differential that evenly distributes power between both rear wheels for additional traction on slick surfaces like mud, snow or slick rocks.

KDSS

Available on 4Runner Trail, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) employs a unique hydraulic system that automatically adjusts suspension performance for the conditions at hand. On road, it reduces body roll for improved handling. Off-road, it simulates disengaging the stabilizer bars for increased wheel articulation on uneven terrain.

4WD with Active Traction Control

4Runner is available with a choice of part or full-time 4WD systems with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), a traction control system designed for optimum performance on a variety of surfaces. So whether it’s a snow-packed highway or a rutted goat trail, A-TRAC will help give you the grip you need to go where you want.

HAC and DAC

Standard HAC helps prevent 4Runner from rolling backward on a steep incline when the driver switches from the brake to the accelerator, and the available DAC system automatically and selectively applies the brakes to help 4Runner descend steep and/or slippery grades at a controlled speed of 2-4 mph.

Crawl Control

Standard on 4Runner Trail, Crawl Control (CRAWL) ¹⁴ automatically modulates the electronic throttle and brakes with your choice of three low-speed settings, so when you get to your favorite rock garden, all you have to do is steer.

Another useful feature of 4Runner Trail, Multi-terrain Select optimizes off-road performance and traction on unstable terrain with four available modes, including Mud, Sand and Dirt, Rock, Loose Rock and Mogul.

Ergonomics

Once you’ve settled into the driver’s seat, you’ll notice 4Runner’s controls are logically placed, highly legible and easy to reach. Located in close proximity to the steering wheel, air conditioning/climate control and audio system adjustments can be made without taking your eyes off the road.

Automatic running boards

Here’s a step in the right direction. Available on certain 4Runner models, automatic running boards automatically deploy from underneath the vehicle whenever a passenger door is opened, and stow away as soon as all doors have been closed.

Third-row seat

Got a big family? On 4Runner SR5 and Limited grades, you can opt for a 50/50 split third-row seat that accommodates two more passengers, for a total of seven. When equipped with this feature, the second row slides forward with one touch to facilitate access to the third row.

40/20/40 folding rear seat

In 4Runner, the rear seat does a lot more than serve as a comfy perch for your passengers. Its split folding feature allows you to fold one or both seats down for up to 88 square feet of cargo capacity ²⁴. Plus, the seatbacks recline for added passenger comfort.

Tire Pressure Monitor System

Proper tire pressure is important not only for good handling and fuel economy, but for your safety. 4Runner’s standard Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) ³¹ evaluates the pressure of the tires and issues a warning if the pressure becomes critically low.

Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

Nighttime is not the only time you need to be seen. Daytime Running Lights, when switched on, help you be seen easier by other road users, in a variety of daytime light conditions. They come standard on all 4Runner grades, and are equipped with a manual on/off feature.

All the airbag (AB) systems are Supplemental Restraint Systems. All ABs (if installed) are designed to inflate only under certain conditions and in certain types of severe collisions: frontal and knee ABs typically inflate in frontal collisions; side and side curtain ABs in side collisions; Roll-Sensing Curtain ABs at a severe tilt degree, roll or lateral G-force. In all other accidents, the ABs will not inflate. To decrease the risk of injury from an inflating AB, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat as far back as possible and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an AB or around the seatback. Do not use a rearward-facing child seat in any front passenger seat. The force of an inflating AB may cause serious injury or death.
