Voice Recognition Overview

Toyota Display Audio with Entune® 7 features voice recognition that controls many aspects of the audio, navigation 15, and phone.

Voice recognition commands power the following multimedia functions:

  • Phone
  • Navigation
  • Media
Note: "Press" refers to hard buttons; "Touch" refers to the display screen (phone or multimedia system).

Press the speaker icon at the top of the screen to adjust the volume up or down.

Phone Voice Recognition

Bluetooth® 8 - capable smartphone must be paired and connected before using the voice recognition feature. To pair your phone for voice recognition, please visit Pair Your Phone

  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel.
  2. A list of voice help command categories will appear on the screen to choose from
  3. Select a command
  4. To place a call, say "call" or "dial"
  5. A voice prompt will ask if you would like to call by name, phone number, dial by number, or redial
  6. Select how you would like to place the call
  7. Say the number you are calling
  8. Say "dial"
  9. Touch "end call"
  10. Say "Help" at any time to get a list of voice-activated commands

One-Shot Phone Dialing

The Display Audio multimedia system uses voice recognition that allows you to input phone call information in one sentence. First time users must sync your phonebook to the system.

  1. Press "set up"
  2. Touch "phone"
  3. Touch "Refresh Phonebook"
Now your phonebook has been synced to the system.
  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel.
  2. Say: "Call" or "Dial" (number); i.e. "Call 212-555-1212"
  3. You can also call from a name in your phonebook
  4. Say: "Call" or "Dial" (name); i.e. "Call David Smith"
  5. If there is more than one phone number for David Smith, a list of choices will appear on the touchscreen
  6. The voice prompt will ask you to choose a number selection to call

To Hang Up or End Call

  1. To end a call, touch End Call on the screen
  2. Or push the phone hang-up button on the steering wheel to end the call

Navigation 15 Voice Recognition One-Shot Navigation 15

Because the Toyota multimedia system uses advanced voice recognition, you can input navigation 15 directions in one sentence.

  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel.
  2. After prompt, without pausing, say "Destination," followed by the street number, street name, city, and state
  3. System will pause and analyze the speech input
  4. System will read back the entire address, or it will list the possible streets that closely match the spoken command
  5. System will ask if you want to start route guidance

Regular Navigation 15 Input

  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel.
  2. Say "Navigation Commands" and follow on-screen voice command instructions
  3. Possible navigation commands include: Destination (one-shot), Enter country, state, city, zip code, street, house number, favorite (pre-programmed), find next (POI brand), show map, or repeat instructions

Media Voice Recognition

One-Shot Media (used to access songs from an iPod® 10, personal music player or USB storage device 11)

  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel
  2. After prompt, without pausing, say "play" 7
  3. System will either read back the artist's name, or it will list the possible artists that closely match the spoken command
  4. System will ask you to select a line number
  5. Select an album, list all or all songs
  6. Say "all songs" and the system will start to play your selection

Regular Media Input

  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel.
  2. Say "Media Commands" and follow on-screen voice command instructions
  3. Voice-activated media commands include: play artist, album, song, genre, playlist; search for music, next track, previous track, or play more like this (system will search for similar music to play)
  4. Say the command you desire and your selection will begin playing

Radio Input

  1. Press the Hands-Free button on the steering wheel.
  2. Say "Radio Commands" and follow on-screen voice command instructions
  3. Voice-activated media commands include: play artist, album, song, search for music, genre, playlist, next track, previous track, or play more like this (system will search for similar music to play)
  4. Say the command you desire and your selection will begin playing

  • What is Entune?
    Entune 7 encompasses the complete audio display stack of your vehicle - including Bluetooth® 8, voice recognition, USB 11, AUX port, and your display screen. On select models equipped with premium audio head units, you have access to navigation and a rich set of Apps and Data Services, now referred to as the “Entune® App Suite” 7.
  • Does Entune® feature voice recognition?
    Yes, Premium HDD Navigation with Entune® features natural language, conversational voice recognition. This reduces the need to memorize preset commands. Display Audio with Navigation and Entune® features command-based voice recognition.
  • What features can you control with the voice recognition system?
    Some Entune® 7 systems already include voice control for data services; by spring 2012, all Entune® systems will have that capability through a user-installable update. The data services are stocks, sports, weather, traffic and fuel prices (where available). BingTM and Pandora® will have (or already have) voice control by early 2012. Premium HDD Navigation with Entune® currently possesses voice recognition for BingTM. In addition, several aspects of the multimedia system have voice recognition capability, as does the hands-free phone operation.
  • Does the Voice Recognition system on Entune recognize different languages?
    The system can recognize English, Spanish and French once the language is changed in the system’s setting. For drivers with accents in their speech, the Entune system can now recognize different tonality, inflection points and accents. You can learn more through the use of the voice recognition training feature within the head unit.
  • How do I know if my vehicle has voice recognition capabilities?
    Advanced Voice Recognition is available on select model year 2014 and later Toyota vehicles, and can be used to operate most features within Entune App Suite 7. Voice recognition can be used by pressing the push-to-talk button on your vehicle's steering wheel. For more information, please refer to your Toyota Owner's Manual.
  • What new features does 'Advanced Voice Recognition' add over 'Voice Recognition'?
    The new Advanced Voice Recognition brings in the following new features that will make it easier for you to interact with your vehicle navigation system:
    • All applications can be launched using voice commands.
    • All applications except Facebook Places and Fuel Guide can be operated using Advanced Voice Recognition, after launching the application.
    • The user will be prompted for smaller pieces of information to clarify a request.
    • The system can remember the context of the speech to allow for more human-like interaction so that the user does not need to repeat the subject.
    • Over 100,000 variations of commands are recognized, and you will be able to speak in a free form manner and still be understood.
    • You can use the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button on the steering wheel as the central location from which you can launch Voice Recognition for all multimedia functions, including apps, navigation, audio and phone.
  • What applications can I launch with voice commands?
    You can launch all multimedia functions using voice commands, even those apps that do not have Advanced Voice Recognition capabilities after launching, such as Facebook Places and Fuel Guide.
  • What features come with Advanced Voice Recognition?
    All apps within Entune App Suite 7, except for Facebook Places and Fuel Guide, support Advanced Voice Recognition.
  • How do I know what commands to use to control an app?
    Advanced Voice Recognition can recognize a large variety of commands, and you can speak in a free-form sentence and still be understood. There is also a Hint Screen on your vehicle navigation system that displays sample commands that can be spoken, depending on the application that you are trying to operate.
  • How do I use the Push-To-Talk button on the steering wheel?
    The Push-To-Talk (PTT) button on your steering wheel allows you to activate Voice Recognition for all Applications, Navigation, Audio and Phone. All you have to do is press the button, and then say "Launch [Application Name]".

Users will have the ability to opt-in to various levels of services. All Plug-in Hybrid Apps require an active subscription to Safety Connect® and download of Entune™ app to compatible smartphone.
  17. An active Safety Connect® account is required. Safety Connect® is dependent upon the telematics device being in operative condition, cellular connection availability and satellite signal reception. All Prius Plug-in Hybrid Advanced models come with a three-year complimentary trial account, which begins on the date the vehicle is purchased by the customer. Customers can register for Safety Connect® at the dealer, or by calling Safety Connect® customer care at 1-800-331-4331.   18. Maximum operation duration of this system is ten minutes. System may not operate if the hybrid battery is under load or if the battery charge is low. While plugged in, this system operates using power from grid. See your Owner's Manual for further information. By activating the Remote Climate feature, your vehicle’s accessory power will be powered on and any last known settings - for example air conditioning, radio and windshield wipers - will resume.
  19. Customers have the option of opting out of the Vehicle Finder application if so desired through the Entune™ account management website at www.myentune.com.
