Toyota announces major increase in U.S. Prius allocation
Prompted by strong consumer demand, Toyota will manufacture 100,000 Prius hybrid cars for the U.S. market during 2005. This follows a strong growth trend in U.S. sales during the past two years. Prius sales in 2004 are on track to exceed 45,000 units for the year, which is significantly higher than the nearly 25,000 sold in 2003. Toyota plans to expand monthly Prius production for the world market to 15,000 in 2005, up from 10,000 in 2004.
Prius wins Industrial Design Gold Medal and Engine of the Year
The Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain won International Engine of the Year at the International Engine of the Year Awards 2004 in Stuttgart, Germany. At this event, Prius also won Best Engine in its displacement category, Best Fuel Economy and Best New Engine. Prius was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2004 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) competition, presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America and sponsored by BusinessWeek. The award criteria include design innovation, benefit to the user, benefit to the client/business, ecological responsibility, aesthetics and appeal.
Toyota recognized for Green Building
Toyota's South Campus development at its Torrance, California, U.S. headquarters won Sustainable/Green Non-Residential Project of the Year at PCBC (formerly the Pacific Coast Builders Conference). The annual PCBC "Gold Nugget" awards honor creative achievements in architecture, design and land use.
Yellowstone Park receives donation of four Prius from Toyota
Toyota has entered into a partnership with the nonprofit Yellowstone Park Foundation, donating four Prius hybrid cars in recognition and support of the park's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Use of the vehicles will help educate many of Yellowstone's three million annual visitors about hybrid technology and the park's commitment to exploring innovative technologies to manage and preserve its natural resources. The cars will be highly visible, wrapped in striking photographic images portraying Yellowstone's extraordinary wildlife.
Toyota sponsors preservation of public lands
For the sixth consecutive year, Toyota has been the National Sponsor of National Public Lands Day, the largest hands-on volunteer conservation program in the U.S. More than 80,000 volunteers, including thousands of Toyota Associates, improved trails, built bridges, removed invasive plants and planted trees in parks and natural areas across the country.
