Don Chaikin, Popular Mechanics' Automotive Editor, said, "I and my three other automotive editors drove and reviewed all the vehicles we had for consideration. Highlander Hybrid deserved the Energy Efficiency Award by consensus.

"We felt that by packaging a 7-passenger SUV with 4-cylinder fuel efficiency and solid performance, Toyota deserved this award for Highlander Hybrid. We feel that Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive®, its latest hybrid system, is doing an exemplary job of bringing well-engineered hybrids to the most people."
