Build a better bicycle helmet

T.H.U.M.S.

Submitted by: Stu S.

I commute by bicycle every day to work, and always wear a helmet. I have no doubt that a bicycle helmet offers protection in case of some types of accidents. However, the standards currently used to certify helmets do not realistically model the human head, skull, brain, and brain stem, and the collision types and modes tested are far from comprehensive, resulting in helmets which offer limited protection, and no good tools or studies to either improve their designs, or to prove that they work. Use T.H.U.M.S. to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of current bicycle helmet technology, and to point the way toward better designs which would be suited to protecting riders from Traumatic Brain Injuries in a broad range of scenarios.
