TOYOTA NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) - Post-Race Notes & Quotes - Ford 200 -- Homestead-Miami Speedway -- November 16, 2007What are your chances to contend for the championship next season?
"Hopefully, great. Trip Bruce (crew chief) and the guys have done a great job for us this season. I believe we ended up third this season, which is really good when you look at everything that happened. When Trip came in this season it was about two days before we left for the Daytona test so to end the season with four wins and this high in the point standings -- that shows a lot. We've been competitive all year -- we've probably had three of four races where we weren't as competitive as we needed to be and we'll work on that stuff over the winter. Hopefully we can be a championship contender next year for sure."
Did you think NASCAR needed to throw that caution flag at the end because other drivers did not think there was enough cause to throw the yellow flag?
"I saw a wrecked truck -- I don't know how big of a piece of debris you need, but I would think a whole truck would classify as one. Maybe they were looking for smaller pieces. I don't know and I wasn't the one that threw the caution. That was their gripe, but it sure made a great event for the fans in the grandstands and everyone watching on television. We were able to take advantage of the 'green-white-checkered' and Kyle (Busch) and I both spun the tires on the restart. At first I didn't think he would go to the outside and I needed to go to the bottom. I was fast down there all day and I knew I had to get there. If it had gone green, I'm sure we would have finished second. But it didn't go green and I was able to get by on the restart."
What must be going through Bill Davis' mind right now with a race winner, but the loss of a title?
"He didn't look real happy and the title is something that has eluded them for a while. It just came down to the last race and they had some issues. Jeff Hensley and their whole crew had a tremendous year and Bill Davis Racing can be proud of what they accomplished and their season. I just hope next year it just comes down to myself and Mike rather than anybody else. Hopefully we can get a championship for Bill Davis Racing next season for sure."
How do feel about Mike Skinner losing the championship tonight?
"I wanted to see Mike win this thing more than anybody -- even through everything that happened last weekend. They needed to race these last couple of races real hard in order to win this and I know we caused a little friction last week. We needed our points, too, and it puts us in a pretty tough situation. But with the problems he had tonight, that helped get us up into the third spot. You could go through every race and find five points that you either threw away or someone else took from you. It was just ill-timing last week on our deal, but Mike had a tremendous season and the championship came down to the last race. My heart feels for them that they didn't win the championship because those guys had a season where they deserved it. But Ron Hornaday and his team had a great season and they deserved it. No matter what happened -- somebody was going to be happy and somebody wasn't."
JASON LEFFLER, No. 1 Red Horse Racing Tundra, Red Horse Racing
Finished: 5th
How does this top-five finish make you feel after your last five races with Red Horse Racing?
"The team made a good call for me to stay out for a few more laps at one point and we were able to catch the caution. We battled hard throughout the race and battled with (Kevin) Harvick at the end of the race. I really have to thank Tom DeLoach and everybody at Red Horse Racing -- they gave me a really strong truck for these five races and I've had a lot of fun. I would have liked to have gotten a win for them before the end of the season, but hopefully they will let me run some more races next year."
JUSTIN MARKS, No. 03 Germain Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing
Finished: 8th
How were you able to use the mid-race caution to score your best-career Truck Series finish?
"It was a great run and we got real lucky there with the caution -- we caught the yellow right at the right time. We were able to pit and stay on the lead lap -- it also helped that we were pretty fast after that too. It was a good strategy to stay out as long as we did and we were able to get a strong finish heading into the off season. It was just a good, solid day and a great way to kick off my career in the truck series. This is how I finished my last season before I entered my first full season of oval track racing and it's great to enter into the off-season with a top-10 finish to think about."
MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis Racing
Finished: 35th
What happened that brought you into the pits early and ultimately back to the garage?
"We were leading the race. We were doing what we were supposed to do and our Tundra was really good. We had a good motor. We had good motors all year. I guess a hub was coming apart. The brake pedal was going to the floor and it was vibrating really badly. We thought it was a right-front because there was so much vibration in the wheel. We changed right-side tires and that didn't fix it. It got worse and worse and finally came apart."
Do you have any regrets for how the season unfolded?
"The guys did a great job. I regret that we didn't have a spare hub in the pits. We took one off another housing, but as it came down to it, it wasn't going to make a difference anyways. It was a great year."
When you knew the problem was bad, what can you do as a driver?
"I just got up next to the wall because I knew it was going to break sooner or later. The left-rear hub fell apart. It was a tough night, but congratulations to Ron (Hornaday). We were racing, though. We were leading the race when it all came down and that's where we were supposed to be. We led every race except for one this year, so I can't go stick my head in the sand. We were where we were supposed to be when the truck broke."
How soon before Bill Davis Racing will get its first title?
"We're going to be back next year with Bill Davis Racing and with our Toyota Tundra. If we can run like we did this year, maybe we can get him one next year. We ran awfully well this year. We knew it would be a sour feeling if we didn't win the championship, but what can you say? This is the first time since I've been driving for Bill Davis Racing that we had a hub come apart."
At the beginning of the year, you said you'd be a 'smarter' driver. Will that continue next year?
"I think we'll bring the 'Tasmanian Devil' back."
JACQUES VILLENEUVE, No. 27 Unicef Tundra, Bill Davis Racing
Finished: 36th
What happened to make you spin and make contact with the wall?
"I just lost the rear end - I'm not sure what happened. The truck was a little bit loose on new tires. We just wanted to tough it out for 10 laps and then it got great. The truck was really strong after all that -- we just lost the rear end there. The Tundra was very easy to drive. Once we got in the rhythm we could run high or low. We could run everywhere."
