CAMRYS TACKLE TWISTY TRACK, TUNDRAS TANGO IN MUSIC CITYJones, making his second NNCS start of the season for Toyota, was substituting for regular driver David Reutimann. He finished 12th in his first Toyota Camry start, in the season’s first road course race at Infineon Raceway.
“The guys did just an awesome job and gave me such a good car,” said Jones, following the race. “I’m just disappointed with how we ended up. We had a top-15 car today, and I was hoping that we could’ve finished up there, but that’s how racing is. Those things sometimes happen.”
Jeremy Mayfield led a pair of laps in the No. 36 360 OTC Camry for Bill Davis Racing, and wound up 27th. Dale Jarrett finished 29th in the No. 44 UPS Camry for Michael Waltrip Racing.
Other Camrys in the field included: Terry Labonte (30th), Dave Blaney (35th) and Brian Vickers (41st).
The six Camrys to start the race matched the most to start a Cup Series race this season. Six Camrys also started at Infineon Raceway in June and last weekend at Pocono Raceway. Friday’s qualifying was cancelled due to rain, and the starting field was set by NNCS owner point standings.
The next race on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series schedule is August 19 at Michigan International Speedway.
In Saturday afternoon’s Zippo 200 NASCAR Busch Series event at Watkins Glen International, David Reutimann was the highest finishing Toyota driver in the field, finishing 25th in the No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine Camry for Michael Waltrip Racing. It was Reutimann’s first-ever start at Watkins Glen, and only the third road course start of his career.
“(Saturday) was just a tough day,” said Reutimann, following the race. “The track is a pretty fast road course, but going into turn one gets pretty tough on restarts with all those cars going in at once. Overall, we lost a little bit in points, but we have some tracks coming up that I think we’re going to be real good at it, so I’m optimistic.”
Jason Leffler wound up 27th in the No. 38 Great Clips Camry, while Braun Racing teammate John Graham finished 31st in the No. Kick-Butt Amped Energy Ballz Camry.
With their finishes, Reutimann (second) and Leffler (fourth) remain in the top-five positions in the NBS point standings after 24 of 35 races.
The next race on the NASCAR Busch Series schedule is August 18 at Michigan International Speedway.
In Saturday night’s Toyota Tundra 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race at Nashville Superspeedway, Toyota drivers Mike Skinner (third) and Todd Bodine (fifth) recorded top-five finishes in the 150-lap event on the 1.333-mile Tennessee track.
Skinner started from the pole in his No. 5 Toyota Tundra and led the first 102 laps of the race. “Our truck got a little tight during the race,” said Skinner, after the event. “When we were in clean air, we could get away with it. However, in dirty air we didn’t have anything for Travis (Kvapil). His truck was just really, really strong -- he mashed the gas when he needed to go. Our Tundra was strong, we just got too tight.”
“I made a huge mistake on one pit stop,” added Skinner. “I changed my foot position when they went around to the left side of my truck and I rolled forward just a little bit, and it messed up our jack man. So, I messed the stop up and it cost us a spot -- actually the spot that Ron (Hornaday, Jr.) got. If we had been in front of Ron, he probably wouldn’t have passed us -- we were running about the same lap times.”
Skinner has now led at least one lap in each of the season’s first 15 races, extending his NCTS record for consecutive races led to begin a season. Dating back to last year, Skinner has now led at least one lap in the last 18 Craftsman Truck Series events.
Bodine’s fifth-place finish was his seventh top-five of the year. “We missed the set-up,” said Bodine, following the race. “We started off too tight and we got too loose. Then, we adjusted back and got too tight. We just missed it. For what we had, we’ll take the fifth-place finish. The guys did a great job trying to fix the truck through the race. I never gave up on it and that’s what we got.”
Other Tundra drivers in the field at Nashville were Ted Musgrave (eighth), David Green (14th), Jack Sprague (15th), Ryan Mathews (16th), Terry Cook (18th), Josh Wise (19th) and Johnny Benson (30th).
In Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session at Nashville, Skinner captured his eighth pole of the season and his 24th career pole position in a Tundra.
Skinner continues to lead the NCTS point standings with 2,521 points, 82 points more than second-place Ron Hornaday, Jr. Following Skinner and Hornaday in the standings are Tundra drivers Bodine (fourth), Benson (sixth), Sprague (seventh) and Musgrave (eighth).
The next race on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule is Wednesday, August 22, at Bristol Motor Speedway.
