Q:How are the FFVs mechanically different from their gasoline counterparts?
A:FFVs have some unique components in the fuel system in order to meet our strident durability requirements, most notably higher capacity fuel injectors, fuel pumps, and ECU logic, designed to deliver larger fuel loads due to the decreased energy output of E85 versus normal gasoline. FFVs also include ethanol-resistant gaskets and seals. There are no other mechanical differences to the engine or drivetrain.
Q:Is there a switch to go from unleaded gasoline to E85?
A:No, there is no action required on the driver's part to use E85 instead of unleaded gasoline.
Q:Will switching back and forth between regular fuel and E85 affect engine durability or performance?
A:No. Only fuel economy will change when switching fuels.
Q:What happens when you have half a tank of unleaded gasoline and add E85?
A:There are no issues with mixing E85 with unleaded gasoline in any ratio. The ECU senses the E85/unleaded gasoline ratio and adjusts engine performance accordingly.
Q:What are the horsepower and torque numbers for the FFV Tundra and Sequoia?
A:Horsepower and torque figures remain unchanged from non-FFV Tundra and Sequoia models. Tundra and Sequoia equipped with 5.7-liter engines generate 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque.
A:No, it will not affect Tundra and Sequoia towing capability. Horsepower and torque will be the same, so overall performance will not be altered.
Q:What is the warranty for these vehicles?
A:The warranty is the same as for non-FFV Tundra and Sequoia models.
The warranty includes Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic new vehicle limited warranty, which applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60 months/60,000 miles and corrosion perforation for 60 months, with no mileage limitation.
Q:On the Monroney label of an E85 Sequoia or Tundra, what mpg number will be reflected, gas or E85 performance?
A:The Monroney label will reflect the gas mpg. However, you will be able to track the E85 estimates for the FFV Tundra and Sequoia on the EPA Web site (www.fueleconomy.gov). Fuel economy will be substantially lower for any vehicle that uses E85 due to its lower energy.
Q:What will the mpg be when using E85 versus unleaded gas?
A:EPA-estimated mpg for Sequoia 4WD models is 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway for unleaded gas, while the E85 EPA-estimated mpg will be 9 city and 12 highway. EPA-estimated mpg for the Tundra 4WD is 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway on unleaded gas, while the E85 EPA-estimated mpg will be 10 city and 13 highway. Although, as expected, the E85 fuel economy numbers are substantially lower than regular gasoline, the Tundra and Sequoia E85 fuel economy is right in line with that of their competitors.
*Depending on driving habits and vehicle maintenance, actual mileage will vary.
Q:The EPA ratings for E85 show a significant drop in fuel efficiency from your unleaded gas models. Why would owners want to use E85 with such poor fuel efficiency, while at the same time paying more at the pump?
A:The reduction in fuel efficiency for E85 is not limited to Toyota models. If you check the EPA Web site, you will see that the EPA fuel ratings for all manufacturers are lower when comparing E85 with unleaded gas. Although you would use more E85 than unleaded gas to go a given distance, overall you would use less fossil fuel with E85. That's why E85 is an option for Tundra and Sequoia 4WD buyers who are concerned about our dependency upon foreign oil.
Q:Why did Toyota feel there was a need for an FFV?
A:FFV is part of Toyota's comprehensive alternative fuel strategy to help reduce the nation's dependency upon foreign oil. The potential market demand for FFV was a contributing factor in making it available in Tundra and Sequoia models.
Q:When will the new FFV Tundra's and FFV Sequoia's go on sale?
A:As a 2009 model, retail sales for the FFV Tundra began in November 2008. Retail sales for the FFV Sequoia (which will be 2010 model year vehicles) will begin in April 2009.
Q:Where will they be assembled?
A:The FFV Tundra will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas. The FFV Sequoia will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana.
Q:The FFV Tundra and FFV Sequoia will be offered in how many models?
A:5.7L 4x4 models in selected states will be FFV. For Sequoia, that's a total of three models. For Tundra, that's a total of nine models.
Q:Why is FFV not available in all Tundra grades?
A:At this point we wanted to make FFV available on our most popular Tundra models, which happen to be 4x4 models equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 engine. This configuration best matched the needs of the markets where there is currently an infrastructure to support FFV. This is a common practice in the truck segment where manufacturers select only one of their multiple engines for FFV application.
Q:Will you offer other models that will be E85-capable?
A:We'll use the Tundra and Sequoia to gauge consumer response and consider adding the option to other vehicles.
Q:In what states will Toyota offer the FFV Tundra and FFV Sequoia?
A:5.7L 4x4 Tundra and Sequoia models in the following states will be FFV-AL, AR, AZ, CO, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA , MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NM, NV, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, WI and WY.
Q:Why are FFVs offered in some states and not in others?
A:We want to focus on markets where there is infrastructure to support them. At the end of 2008, there were approximately 1,600 gas stations that sold E85, the large majority of which were concentrated in the Midwest.
