Denny Hamlin outlasted most of his fellow competitors in a rain-postponed race at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway to score a third-place finish on Monday afternoon.
After starting from the rear of the field, Hamlin was involved in an on-track incident on Lap 108, sustaining damage to the right-front of his Toyota Camry. Hamlin went one lap down, but was able to get back on the lead lap and bide his time in a crash-filled final stage. With two laps remaining, Hamlin got a good restart to come home in third place.
“I was just trying to play chess out there,” said Hamlin. “I knew my odds and percentages with the wrecks. I knew once my competitors started to fall there, I knew that I had to be smart. Once I saw that the percentage was better for me to go race up front for the win versus just taking the end of the lead lap even if we were to crash, I knew it was in my best interest to try to go there at the end and we almost won it anyway.”Denny Hamlin
