Brandon Jones Nets Toyota’s 500th NASCAR Victory
Supra drivers sweep top three positions at Phoenix
It’s been a wild ride for Toyota since entering the top echelon of NASCAR in 2004 in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS). In July of that year, Toyota earned their first NASCAR victory and fast forward to almost 17 years later, and Toyota has earned its 500th NASCAR national series triumph.
Brandon Jones earned the milestone moment when he drove his Toyota Supra to the front of the NASCAR Xfinity Series field on Saturday in Phoenix’s NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) race. He passed veteran racer Kyle Busch in the closing laps en route to victory lane. He led 24 of 200 laps to earn his spot in the 2020 series playoffs with his second career NXS win.
“Toyota is the manufacturer to be with – I love these guys so much. It’s like a family working with them,” said Jones. “Kyle Busch drove to the bottom and I looked at him and thought there’s no way he just went to the bottom since I was so strong on the top. That just gave us the position to do it. Man, I cannot believe the lead we ended up getting. These guys put in a lot of work. This is a new car we brought to the track this week. This is big for us. This is obviously a championship race at the end of the year. We have something to bring back and compete with them. If we continue to put in the work, we’re going to be there at the end of this thing.”Brandon Jones
Since 2004, 48 drivers have won behind the wheel of a Toyota race car with 144 NASCAR Cup Series, 164 NXS and 192 NGROTS victories. Joe Gibbs Racing is the winningest Toyota NASCAR team with 277 combined Toyota victories in the Cup (119) and Xfinity Series (158).
Harrison Burton (second), Kyle Busch (third) and Riley Herbst (10th) also claimed top-10 results at the one-mile track.
The NXS returns east with a visit to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 14.
