Amy was in her physical prime when a form of bacterial meningitis claimed her legs below the knee, her spleen and her kidneys. The disease, however, could not claim her heart and spirit. Seven months after receiving her prosthetics, Amy strapped back into her snowboard. And at the 2014 Sochi Winter Paralympics, she medaled in the snowboard cross competition, earning bronze.
Immediately after earning her bronze medal, Amy’s star power began to rise. She became a contestant on a celebrity dance competition and was named runner-up. And in late 2014, she published a memoir titled On My Own Two Feet. Still, even with all the accomplishments she had made off the snow, Amy wanted to get back to competing on it. And during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics, she again medaled in snowboard cross—silver this time—as well as bronze in the banked slalom competition.
