Long grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, but is originally from Siberia. When she was only 13 months old, she was adopted from a Russian orphanage. Born with fibular hemimelia, Jessica had to have her legs amputated below the knees so she could be fitted for prosthetic legs and learn how to walk. She began swimming in her grandparents' pool before joining her first competitive team in 2002. By age 12, she was a member of the Paralympic Team and represented Team USA in Athens.
Jessica is heading to Tokyo as the second-most decorated U.S. Paralympic athlete of all time. But after the Paralympic Games Rio 2016, there was a point when she really thought about retiring. Rio wasn’t the performance she wanted. She was forced to take a step back and remember why she started swimming and fall in love with the sport again. Determined to return to the world stage stronger and faster than ever before, Jessica is focusing more on her mental awareness and maintaining a balance with life and sport. In overcoming this setback, she’s learned to accept the good and bad because together they’ve made her the athlete she is today.
