Hearing his coach’s words, "Remember, there will always be someone better," first ignited Andrew’s passion for sports; then a ski lesson gifted by a physical therapist sparked his Paralympic Winter Games journey. Many medals later, it’s his indomitable spirit that keeps Andrew on the slopes, and it made him the perfect racer for the global premiere of the first-ever Toyota Sit-Ski at the Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. "I’m a very particular sit-skier because my life is on the line when I’m out there, and I want to make sure that not only am I safe, but I’m fast. Win, lose or draw, the Toyota Sit-Ski is an awesome monoski."

When Danelle Umstead and her father found a skiing program for people with visual disabilities, neither of them knew what a turning point it would be. After just one run, she was hooked. As Danelle puts it, "When I took those first turns with my father, my life changed." Competing in her fourth Paralympic Games at Beijing in 2022 with husband Rob as her sighted guide, she encourages up-and-coming Para athletes to work as hard as they can, especially after bad days—because every athlete has them. Danelle thanks Toyota for being at the forefront of Paralympic sponsorship and for giving her the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

Inspired by the speed of a professional football star in his hometown of Chicago, Isaac decided to try out for high-school track, beating the fastest guy on the team on his first day. On the second, his coach told him he believed Isaac could qualify for a state championship. It was those words that truly sparked Isaac’s passion for the sport. Today, Isaac hopes to positively impact current and future Paralympic athletes by inspiring them to have the confidence and courage to chase dreams of their own. He is thankful that Toyota has created a way to help other athletes like him with a chance to showcase the full extent of their abilities.

Already a medalist in Para rowing at the Olympic Summer Games London 2012, Oksana Masters jumped at the chance to try Para cross-country skiing when a coach invited her to attend training camp. An early fall was all the motivation she needed to give the new sport her all. Falling, she learned, is part of the process. It’s this lesson that Oksana wants to pass on to aspiring Para athletes. "There’s no perfect timeline. As long as you keep getting up and keep doing your best, that’s all that matters." She’s grateful for the opportunities Toyota has provided for her and Para athletes everywhere.

Getting involved with Para sled hockey fed his appetite for competition, but it was the camaraderie with his teammates in the locker room that was key to Rico Roman’s recovery. A Purple Heart recipient from his service in the Iraq War, Rico Roman says Toyota’s sponsorship has enabled him to obtain, and in many cases, personally build, custom hockey equipment that works for him. "Putting money directly in the hands of athletes is huge, and helps us chase the dream of bringing home a gold medal." But still, he preaches patience. Success doesn’t come without effort. "Putting in the time, putting in the work, is how you get better at anything."
