The Challenge
Yellowstone National Park is one of the most beautiful, grand and majestic land preservations in America. It’s also one of the most remote stretches of land, untouched by modern technology or conveniences.
Providing power to areas beyond the reach of conventional power sources meant that fossil fuel powered generators would have to do the job. However, these generators polluted the air and the sound of the tranquil national park.
The Toyota Effect
Toyota came up with a solution born out of sustainability: switch from fossil fuels to solar energy by using recycled Toyota Camry batteries.
Together, park officials and Toyota engineers were able to successfully switch power sources at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch from diesel generators to solar-powered arrays that store energy in the recycled Camry Hybrid batteries.
"We have eight million hybrid vehicles on the road today. Imagine if we can do this with 200 batteries, over time what we would do with eight million batteries. The opportunity is all around us."
Jim Lentz, Chief Executive Officer, Toyota North America
