Mothers of Invention – Having Fun and Saving Lives with Soap
Shubham Issar and Amanat Anand created SoaPen while studying at the Parsons School of Design. They designed SoaPen to address the 1.5 million children under the age of five die every year from infectious diseases - a majority of which can be prevented by washing hands with soap. With SoaPen, kids can draw on their hands with colorful, berry scented soap sticks that rinse away to leave their hands clean. For every three pens sold in the United States, SoaPen donates one to a school in a low-income community.
Issar and Anand won the UNICEF Wearables for Good Challenge 2016 for the concept of SoaPen, were list makers on Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2017, and conducted a successful Kickstarter which led to launching SoaPen on Amazon in October 2018. SoaPen makes hand washing fun for kids and provides a simple and innovative way to save lives.
Since its inception in 2012, Toyota has cultivated the Toyota Mothers of Invention program by not only awarding more than $1 million to these women-led companies with Driving Solutions grants, but also facilitating networking opportunities, building relevant connections, and providing access to intellectual capital to help their organizations go places. These women, who are leading the charge to work on issues like homelessness, education, food, water, energy, and more, come from all over the world, and are using innovation to create lasting and sustainable impact.
