Tour our Georgetown, Kentucky Operation
It all began with an idea born out of respect for American ingenuity and the abilities of the U.S. workforce. In 1985 Toyota, the strongest of Japan's automakers, decided to unite there manufacturing know-how with America's strengths to produce a car made in America by Americans.* Based on mutual understanding and positive interaction, tremendous benefits have been derived from both sides.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown, Kentucky is now Toyota's largest production facility outside of Japan. From thumbnail-size computer chips guiding robot welders to 2300-ton presses, this $4 billion automotive complex embodies the winning spirit and innovative thinking that creates the Toyota Camry, Avalon and starting later this year, the Sienna minivan. Operations include Stamping, Die Manufacturing, Body Weld, Paint, Plastics, Assembly, Engine/Axle Machining and Assembly; all performed in a futuristic, state-of-the-art, surgically clean environment.
Toyota is justifiably proud of this technically advanced 7.92 million sq. ft. manufacturing complex that has infused new life into the commonwealth of Kentucky by creating over 20,000 jobs including those at TMMK and throughout our growing community of suppliers. The result has been success and growth beyond our most ambitious expectations.
"Excellence Begins Here"
This banner marks the beginning of each assembly line, reminding everyone involved of Toyota's commitment to leadership through quality. In 1990 J. D. Power granted Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky its first ever Gold Plant Quality Award and we've been accumulating accolades ever since. Now more than 400,000 vehicles roll off the assembly line annually thanks to the efforts and dedication of more than 7,000 team members.
Every one of the team members associated with the overwhelming success of this massive undertaking has grown along with us. Most of the team who worked together to produce the first Camry here in Kentucky are still with Toyota. Their responsibilities have grown as has our sense of commitment to U.S. suppliers and the community. TMMK continues its strong support to the state and the community with gifts in excess of $7 million and invests more than $3 billion per year in the parts and services provided by 274 U.S. suppliers. We are also Kentucky's leading exporter, shipping over $1.4 billion annually in vehicles, parts and engines.
At TMMK, family values, teamwork and individual responsibility are more than rhetoric, they are a reality. On-site 24 hour childcare gives peace of mind to team members who are parents. And, if you're looking for an environment where new ideas are applauded, you've found it. In one year alone over 2.2 million suggestions were submitted at Toyota worldwide and over 95% were adopted. Proof that at TMMK, you will have a voice in decisions affecting the success of our manufacturing operation and the direction of your career.
