SIX GOALS TO A BETTER PLANET
THAT'S SOMETHING WE ALL CAN GET BEHIND

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE 1:
BY 2050, WE WILL ELIMINATE ALMOST ALL CO2 EMISSIONS FROM NEW TOYOTA VEHICLES.

Reducing CO2 emissions by 90 percent from new vehicles by 2050 is a really big deal. That’s why we’re working today to explore and innovate advanced vehicle technologies that move our fleet toward zero emissions – like next generation hybrids and zero emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE 2:
BY 2050, WE WILL ELIMINATE CO2 EMISSIONS FROM THE MANUFACTURING OF PARTS AND MATERIALS AS WELL AS FROM END-OF-LIFE DISPOSAL OF TOYOTA VEHICLES.

To achieve Challenge 2, the process of making the parts and materials we purchase to assemble our vehicles will no longer generate CO2. And when our vehicles reach the end of their useful life, no CO2 will be left behind.

This will require close collaboration with suppliers and partners to achieve Toyota’s vision for a better planet.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE 3:
BY 2050, WE WILL ELIMINATE ALL CO2 EMISSIONS FROM TOYOTA OPERATIONS, INCLUDING MANUFACTURING, DISTRIBUTION AND OFFICES.

Challenge 3 demands we rethink the way we power our facilities, especially manufacturing plants where we assemble our vehicles – and that’s no small task.

So today, we are piloting renewable energy projects across North America – leading, learning and sharing our inspired thinking throughout the organization. Meeting Challenge 3 leverages the unified effort of all our North American team members. One group. One resolve. One Toyota.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE 4:
BY 2050, TOYOTA WILL MINIMIZE THE USE OF WATER WITHIN ALL TOYOTA OPERATIONS, INCLUDING MANUFACTURING, DISTRIBUTION AND OFFICES.

As the availability of clean water becomes more and more important to the Toyota communities in drought-stressed regions of North America, we will continue to manage and conserve this critical resource. Meeting Challenge 4 will reduce the clean water we withdraw, as well as, ensure the water we return to the environment is clean.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE 5:
BY 2050, WE WILL ENSURE ALL OUR PROCESSES AND FACILITIES SUPPORT A RECYCLING-BASED SOCIETY.

Understanding that recycling is more than segmenting trash is central to overcoming Challenge 5. We must open our minds and change our behavior, first by intentionally keeping materials from ever becoming waste, then by reclassifying these materials from worthless to a potentially valuable resource.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE 6:
BY 2050, WE WILL ENSURE ALL OUR PROCESSES AND FACILITIES OPERATE IN HARMONY WITH THEIR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS.

We know Toyota provides important benefits to the communities where we live, work and play. We also know that each location has a unique and important natural balance of plants, animals and ecosystems. That’s why Challenge 6 supports our efforts to minimize disruption of natural habitats at our facilities across North America.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Our North American Environmental Report features information about our four focus areas – CARBON, WATER, MATERIALS and BIODIVERSITY – plus related OUTREACH activities. This report covers all aspects of the vehicle life cycle throughout the Toyota and Lexus brands during the 2016 fiscal and product model year. This report also defines our long-term environmental sustainability strategy as we continue to advance toward a more sustainable future.

Some of our achievements in fiscal year 2016 included:

• Winning our 12th consecutive ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award from the U.S. EPA for sustained excellence in energy management.
• Partnering with our dealership facilities in California to educate customers about water conservation and reduce water use by more than 8 million gallons.
• Being named the WasteWise Very Large Business Partner of the Year by the U.S. EPA for our efforts to reduce waste, increase recycling and purchase environmentally preferable products.
• Adding new pollinator gardens and enhancing existing ones at 11 sites to help protect the monarch butterfly, an important pollinator species and the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration.
