2021 Tundra vs. RAM 1500 Comparison

There's more to a truck than how much it can haul. As we break down the comparison specs of the Tundra vs. RAM 1500, you'll see that these two trucks offer a lot more than just reliable performance capabilities.

For one, the Tundra has loads of standard safety features included with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) on every available configuration. The RAM 1500 doesn't have as many standard active or passive safety features across many comparable grades.

The 2021 Tundra also offers a lot more standard connectivity options that would require an available package or model upgrade for the RAM 1500 to compare.

In the first feature comparison section below, we begin with performance and then move on to safety and interior features. Read on to see which full-size truck has what you need.

  • The Tundra has more standard horsepower than the RAM 1500.
  • The Tundra can also tow more than the RAM 1500 without additional towing packages.
  • Both the Tundra and the RAM 1500 have a maintenance program to keep your truck going for years to come.

While the 2021 Ram 1500 has multiple engine options to choose from, the 2021 Tundra’s standard V8 has all the power you need.

Engine Power

For big engine power, all Toyota Tundras come standard with a 5.7-Liter Aluminum i-FORCE V8 engine and 381 horsepower. While the Ram 1500 Tradesman does have an available V8, it comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine and 305 horsepower.

With a more robust standard engine, the Tundra is also able to tow more without extra add-ons. The base model Tundra SR 4x2 Double Cab with a 6.5-ft. bed can tow up to 10,200 lbs. The standard towing capacity for the TRADESMAN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX without any towing packages is 7,740 lbs. Plus, the Tundra also comes with a TOW/HAUL Mode switch and an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC). For the comparable Trailer Brake-Controller on the base model RAM 1500 TRADESMAN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX you'd have to add on a $295 Trailer Brake Controller package.

After using your truck to do just about anything, it's best practice to keep up with scheduled maintenance to ensure it runs longer. All Tundra models come with ToyotaCare which includes factory-scheduled maintenance and Roadside Assistance. Maintenance includes engine oil and filter changes, tire rotations, multi-point inspection, and assistance with inspecting and adjusting fluid levels. These Toyota services last for two years or 25,000 miles. Comparatively, Ram Care is a 2-year membership that provides four oil changes and four tire rotations. The RAM 1500 also has Roadside Assistance through Mopar®. This lasts for 5 years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes first) for gas models and 5 years and 100,000 miles for diesel models.

  • Tundra has more active safety features than the base model RAM 1500.
  • You'd need to purchase a safety package on the 2021 RAM 1500 TRADESMAN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX to get most Toyota-comparable safety features.
  • The RAM 1500 misses out on knee airbags, something the Toyota Tundra includes on all models.

Whether hauling payload for work or the kids for a family vacation, advanced active safety features add peace of mind. The Tundra includes these features across all configurations.

Standard Safety Features

With the Tundra you get a whole slew of driver assistive technologies with the Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) package. You get standard Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).

Looking at the competition, the RAM 1500 doesn't offer many active safety features standard on the base model. Full-Speed Forward-Collision Warning Plus, Lane Keep Assist, and Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection are available on the 2021 RAM 1500 TRADESMAN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX but only with the addition of the Level I Safety Group package. For available Automatic High-Beam Headlamp-Control and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go you'd need the 2021 RAM 1500 LARAMIE QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX or higher. None of these features are even available on the 2021 RAM 1500 TRADESMAN HFE QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX or RAM 1500 HFE CREW CAB 4X2.

Aside from active safety features, the Tundra also has a driver and front outboard passenger Advanced Airbag System, driver and front outboard passenger seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and front and rear Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA). The RAM 1500 has Advanced Multistage Front Air Bags, Supplemental Front Seat Side Airbags, Supplemental Side Airbags, and Supplemental Side Curtain Front/Rear Air Bags. It misses out on knee airbags, however.

Interior of 2021 Tundra

  • The base model Tundra has plenty of multimedia features standard while the RAM 1500 TRADESMAN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX needs an extra package to get them.
  • The Tundra also has a larger standard touchscreen than the RAM 1500.
  • The Tundra has Wi-Fi Connect with up to 2 GB of data within a 3-month trial. The base model RAM 1500 does not.

Performance and safety features help you arrive safely, but the right combination of interior convenience and multimedia features enhance your drive along the way.

Multimedia and Connectivity

When you want to stay connected, the Tundra has standard Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Plus, you get SiriusXM® with a 3-month All Access trial. Google Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and SiriusXM® are only available on the 2021 RAM 1500 TRADESMAN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX with the Electronics Group package and Power and Remote Entry Group for a total of $1,430. These features come standard starting on the 2021 RAM 1500 LARAMIE QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX.

Without the package upgrade, the 2021 RAM 1500 comes standard with a 5" touchscreen display while the 2021 Tundra has a 7-in. touchscreen.

Another cool feature of the Tundra is that you can work remotely with the help of wi-fi. The Tundra's standard Wi-Fi Connect includes up to 2 GB of data within a 3-month trial. The 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hot Spot is not available on the base model RAM 1500. You'd have to get the 2021 RAM 1500 BIG HORN QUAD CAB® 4X2 6'4" BOX for this available feature.
