Toyota Corolla vs. Hyundai Elantra
Performance
- The 2024 Toyota Corolla comes with a standard 2.0-liter Dynamic Force gas engine that generates 169 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. On the other hand, the Hyundai Elantra comes standard with a 2.0-liter gas engine that delivers 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 132 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm.
- Both these compact cars are also available with fuel-efficient hybrid drivetrains. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid has a 1.8-liter engine, paired with an electric motor, which delivers 138 net combined horsepower and 105 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid has a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine that generates a combined power output of 139 horsepower and 109 lb.-ft. of torque.
- Both the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra are available only in front-wheel drive, however, AWD is available on the Corolla’s Hybrid powertrain. The Corolla Hybrid is available with Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD), which optimizes traction by activating a dedicated rear motor when loss of traction occurs, striking a balance between performance and fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, the Elantra does not have an all-wheel drive on any model, gas or hybrid.
- Both the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra come with continuously variable transmissions. The Toyota Corolla comes standard with a Dynamic Shift CVT, which combines the immediate response of a fixed first gear with the refinement and efficiency of a CVT. Similarly, the Hyundai Elantra comes standard with a Smartstream® Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). Neither of these compact cars comes with a manual transmission.
- All Toyota Corolla models come with an Independent MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar. The Corolla LE grade comes with a torsion beam rear suspension while the Nightshade, SE, and XSE come with a multi-link rear suspension system. The LE trim has a standard torsion beam rear suspension. In contrast, all models of the Hyundai Elantra come standard with a Macpherson strut front suspension and a coupled torsion beam rear suspension.

- The FWD Toyota Corolla Hybrid models have EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of up to 53 mpg in the city, 46 mpg on the highway, and 50 mpg combined. AWD-equipped Toyota Corolla Hybrid models have EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of up to 51 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway, and 48 mpg combined.
- The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid has EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 49 mpg in the city, 52 mpg on the highway, and 50 mpg combined. The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid does not have AWD-equipped models.

- All Toyota Corolla trims come standard with an 8-in. Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen infotainment system. Similarly, the Hyundai Elantra starts with an 8-in. touchscreen display on the SE trim. However, a 10.25-in. touchscreen is standard on the Elantra’s SEL and the Limited trims.
- For the Toyota Corolla, wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ compatibility, as well as a SiriusXM® 3-month trial subscription are standard across the lineup. In contrast, the Hyundai Elantra SE comes standard with wireless Android Auto™ and CarPlay®, but these are not available in the SEL and Limited trims. Additionally, a 3-month SiriusXM Satellite Radio trial is standard in the SEL and Limited trims, while it’s not available in the SE trim.
- The Toyota Corolla comes standard with a six-speaker audio system. Those seeking an enhanced audio experience can opt for the nine-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system with an amplifier and subwoofer. The JBL Premium Audio system is available on the Corolla Nightshade and XSE models as part of an option package. On the other hand, the Hyundai Elantra SE and SEL come with six speakers. However, an eight-speaker Bose premium audio system and subwoofer are exclusive on the Elantra Limited trim.
- Navigation on the Toyota Corolla is available via Drive Connect, as an optional subscription for all Toyota Corolla trims. Drive Connect is 4G network dependent. In contrast, navigation for the Hyundai Elantra is available via Hyundai’s BlueLink® Guidance Package, which is standard on the Limited and is available to the SEL as an option.
- For added convenience, a Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charger is standard on the Toyota Corolla XSE and is available on the SE as an option. - All models of the 2024 Toyota Corolla come standard with Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) as part of Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0). In contrast, Hyundai’s Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC) is not available on the entry-level Hyundai Elantra SE. It is standard on the Limited and is available on the SEL as part of the Convenience Package.
- The Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra both come standard with a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), and Automatic High Beams (AHB). The Hyundai Elantra does not have features comparable to Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) which are found on every Toyota Corolla model.
- A Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) is standard on the Toyota Corolla XSE and is available as part of an optional package on the LE, SE, and Nightshade trims. In contrast, all trims of the Hyundai Elantra come standard with a Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) system, but a Blind-Spot View Monitor is exclusive to the top-of-the-line Elantra Limited.
- The 2024 Toyota Corolla has an NHTSA overall safety rating of five, which is the highest possible rating achievable. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra has not been rated by NHTSA. However, the 2023 Hyundai Elantra was given an NHTSA overall safety rating of five.
- The 2024 Toyota Corolla comes standard with power-assisted ventilated 10.8-in. front disc brakes and solid 10.2-in. rear disc brakes paired with an Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system. Similarly, the Hyundai Elantra also comes standard with 4-wheel disc brakes.

- The Toyota Corolla is carefully designed with safety and convenience in mind. Every 2024 Toyota Corolla comes standard with Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Proactive Driving Assist (PDA), and Road Sign Assist (RSA) as part of Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0). In contrast, adaptive cruise control is not available for the entry-level Elantra SE. Additionally, the Hyundai Elantra does not have features comparable to Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) and Road Sign Assist (RSA) on any of its models.
- Every Toyota Corolla comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ compatibility, as well as a three-month SiriusXM® trial subscription. In contrast, buyers will have to choose between these features on the Hyundai Elantra. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ are only available on the base-level Elantra SE, while SiriusXM Satellite Radio is only available on the Elantra SEL and Limited.
