Toyota’s Early Motorsports History

In 1957, Toyota’s Toyopet Crown Deluxe entered the 1957 Round Australia Trial (Mobilgas Rally), making Toyota the first Japanese carmaker to compete in international motorsports. To accomplish this, Toyota established a motorsports division, which would become Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in 1976.
2007: The Creation of Toyota Gazoo Racing

Hiromu Naruse and Akio Toyoda form a racing team of Toyota employees, using their experience in the Nürburgring’s 24-hour endurance race to make Toyota cars even better. They race under Toyota's marketing and Internet brand, Gazoo.com, which ultimately leads to the creation of Gazoo Racing, now known as GR.
2009: Toyota’s Thrilling Transformation Begins

In 2009, Akio Toyoda takes the helm as president of Toyota, determined to inject new energy into the brand. In 2017, he unveils a new mission to make more exciting cars–especially in motorsports. Personally test-driving them, Akio puts every GR through their paces to develop them into ever-better vehicles.
2019-2022: Toyota Brings Track Expertise to Every Driver

In 2019, GR Supra debuts at the Detroit Auto Show as the first in Toyota’s line of GR brand-exclusive vehicles. In 2021, the GR86 is announced, followed by the first-ever GR Corolla in 2022. Toyota’s full lineup of GR vehicles is now ready to hit the streets and compete in U.S. motorsports.
2023: The GR Cup

Toyota launches an all-new racing single-make race series using the GR86 Cup car, built at the GR Garage in Mooresville, N.C. Competitive and affordable, the GR Cup is designed to celebrate car culture, motorsports, and especially the enthusiasts. With a substantial one million dollars in purse and prizes, this event provides amateur racers provide some of the most exciting sports-car racing while competing for the podium.
2025: TGR Returns to Nürburgring

TGR and Morizo will resume racing in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, furthering Toyota’s mission of building ever-better cars.
