This system detects the conditions of the front passenger seat and activates or deactivates the devices for the front passenger. The AIRBAG ON or AIRBAG OFF light illuminates to keep the driver and front passenger advised of the system‘s status.

This light also comes on when the parking brake is not released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully released, the system is operating normally.

Malfunction in the Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system

A buzzer sounds to indicate that the parking brake is still engaged (with the vehicle having reached a speed of 3 mph [5 km/h]).

Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system warning buzzer:
A buzzer sounds to indicate that a malfunction has occurred that could lead to a loss of brake effectiveness.

BSM outside rearview mirror indicators
The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) is a system that has two functions:

The Blind Spot Monitor function
Assists the driver in making a decision when changing lanes.

The Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) function

Assists the driver when backing up.

These functions use the same sensors.

BSM main switch
Pressing the switch turns the system on or off. When the switch is set to ON, the switch’s indicator illuminates. The same switch is used for both BSM and RCTA functions.

Outside rearview mirror indicator
Blind Spot Monitor function:
When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, the outside rearview mirror indicator comes on while the turn signal lever is not operated, and the outside rearview mirror indicator flashes while the turn signal lever is operated.

Use cruise control to maintain a set speed without depressing the accelerator pedal. Press the ON/OFF button to activate cruise control. The cruise control indicator will come on. Press the button again to deactivate cruise control.

In EV Drive Mode, the electric motor, powered by the hybrid battery, is used to drive the vehicle. This mode allows you to drive in residential areas late at night, or in indoor parking lots, etc., without concern for noises and exhaust gas emissions. When EV Drive Mode is turned on, the EV Drive Mode indicator will come on. Pressing the switch when in EV Drive Mode will return the vehicle to normal driving (using the gasoline engine and electric motor).

High-beam headlights aid driver visibility by projecting a bright beam far down the road. They should be used only in situations where they cannot blind oncoming traffic or vehicles traveling directly in front. Typical uses would be in remote areas such as mountains or deserts.

Vehicles without the Smart Key System:
This indicator light flashes after the key has been removed from the engine switch to indicate that the system is operating. The indicator light stops flashing after the registered key has been inserted into the engine switch to indicate that the system has been canceled.

Vehicles with the Smart Key System:
This indicator light flashes after the POWER switch has been turned off to indicate that the system is operating. The indicator light stops flashing after the POWER switch has been turned to ACCESSORY or ON mode to indicate that the system has been canceled.

The Intuitive Parking Assist switch turns the Intuitive Parking Assist on/off. When on, the indicator light comes on and a buzzer sounds to inform the driver that the system is operational.

A buzzer sounds when the sensors are operating:

  • The buzzer increases as the vehicle approaches an obstacle. When the vehicle comes within the following distance of the obstacle, the buzzer sounds continuously:
  • Front and rear corner sensors: Approximately 0.8 ft. (25 cm)
  • Rear center sensors: Approximately 1.1 ft. (35 cm)
  • When two or more obstacles are detected simultaneously, the system responds to the nearest obstacle. If one or both come within the above distances, the beep will repeat a long tone, followed by fast beeps.

In the following situations, the system may not function correctly due to a sensor malfunction, etc.:

  • The Intuitive Parking Assist operation display flashes, and a beep sounds when no obstacles are detected
  • If the area around a sensor collides with something, or is subjected to strong impact
  • If the error occurs even when there is no ice, snow or mud on the sensor

Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

Do not apply intensive bursts of water or steam to the sensor area. Doing so may result in the sensor malfunctioning.

Highlander HV-2016-{{imageAltName}}Lane Departure Alert (LDA) indicator

While driving on a road that has lane markers, this system recognizes the lane markers using a camera as a sensor to alert the driver when the vehicle deviates from its lane. If the system judges that the vehicle has deviated from its lane, it alerts the driver using a buzzer and indicators on the Multi-Information Display.

Indicates that the VSC/TRAC systems are operating.

If the vehicle is in danger of slipping or rolling backward on an incline, or if the four wheels spin, the indicator flashes to indicate that the VSC/TRAC systems have been engaged. The slip indicator light flashes when ABS is operating.

Warning light/details:

Tire pressure warning light

When the light comes on:
Low tire inflation pressure.

Correction procedure:
Adjust the tire inflation pressure (including the spare tire) to the specified level. The light will turn off after a few minutes. In case the light does not turn off even if the tire inflation pressure is adjusted, have the system checked by your Toyota dealer.

Warning light/details:

When the light comes on after blinking for one minute:
Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system.

Correction procedure:
Have the system checked by your Toyota dealer.

Highlander HV-2016-{{imageAltName}}Turn signal indicator

Indicates that one of the turn signals has been activated.

Turn signals can be operated when:

Vehicles without a Smart Key System:
The engine switch is in the ON position.

Vehicles with a Smart Key System:
The POWER switch is in ON mode.

If the indicators flash faster than usual, check that a lightbulb in the front or rear turn signal lights has not burned out.

Highlander HV-2016-{{imageAltName}}VSC OFF indicator

Indicates that the TRAC and/or VSC systems have been disabled.

If the vehicle gets stuck in fresh snow or mud, TRAC and VSC may reduce power from the hybrid system to the wheels. You may need to turn the systems off to enable you to rock the vehicle in order to free it.

Turning off TRAC and VSC
Push and hold the button while the vehicle is stopped to turn off TRAC and VSC. The TRAC OFF and VSC OFF indicator lights will come on. Push the button again to turn the systems back on.

*If a safety system warning light does not come on...

Should a safety system light such as the ABS and SRS airbag warning lights not come on when you start the hybrid system, this could mean that these systems are not available to help protect you in an accident, which could result in death or serious injury. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately if this occurs.

Dashboard icons are displayed in a variety of colors, depending on the system and its status in a specific vehicle. Yellow icons indicate an item of importance (such as low fuel), but are not necessarily a warning. Red icons indicate a condition that requires immediate attention, such as an open door or low engine oil pressure. See your vehicle's Owner's Manual for more details.
