If the vehicle gets stuck in fresh snow or mud, the TRAC (TRC)/VSC systems may reduce power from the engine to the wheels. You may need to turn the system off to enable you to rock the vehicle in order to free it.

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is part of the Star Safety System standard on all Toyotas, this feature interprets data from a steering wheel position sensor and the ABS wheel-speed sensors to determine if the vehicle is following the driver‘s intended path. Activating the Second Gear Start Switch causes the automatic transmission to start in second gear instead of first gear, which is useful on slick surfaces like ice, snow or mud. With second gear start selected, the driver often has better control of the throttle, allowing them ease the vehicle away without losing traction.

Highlander-2011-{{imageAltName}}SRS airbag on-off indicator

Highlander-2011-{{imageAltName}}TRAC OFF indicator

{{singleLineArray[32]}}

If the vehicle gets stuck in fresh snow or mud, the TRAC (TRC)/VSC systems may reduce power from the engine to the wheels. You may need to turn the system off to enable you to rock the vehicle in order to free it.

The Traction Control (TRAC) helps a vehicle‘s drive wheels gain and maintain grip during acceleration, especially on slippery surfaces. By interpreting data from the ABS wheel-speed sensors, TRAC can tell if a drive wheel is turning faster than a non-drive wheel, which indicates loss of traction. When TRAC detects slippage, the system can automatically reduce engine power until the wheel that is slipping slows and regains grip. If reducing engine power isn‘t enough, the braking system will gradually slow that wheel through pulsed brake action.

Highlander-2011-{{imageAltName}}Turn signal indicator

{{singleLineArray[33]}}

Indicates that the turn signal is on.

If the indicator flashes faster than usual, check that a light bulb in the front or rear turn signal lights has not burned out.

Caution*

*If a safety system warning light does not come on...

Should a safety system light such as the ABS and SRS airbag warning lights not come on when you start the hybrid system, this could mean that these systems are not available to help protect you in an accident, which could result in death or serious injury. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately if this occurs.

Dashboard icons are displayed in a variety of colors, depending on the system and its status in a specific vehicle. Yellow icons indicate an item of importance (such as low fuel), but are not necessarily a warning. Red icons indicate a condition that requires immediate attention, such as an open door or low engine oil pressure. See your vehicle's Owner's Manual for more details.
