Frequently Asked Questions

On a full charge, the EPA-estimated range rating depends on the powertrain and grade:

  • XLE FWD: 252 miles
  • XLE AWD: 228 miles
  • Limited FWD: 242 miles
  • Limited AWD: 222 miles

Use above ratings for comparison purposes only. Actual driving range will vary depending on how/where you drive, charging habits, HVAC/accessory use, outside temperature and other factors. Battery capacity also decreases over the life of the vehicle, which will reduce range. See www.fueleconomy.gov and Owner's Manual for details.

Driving range may decrease significantly depending on speed, outside temperature, HVAC/accessory use, how/where you drive, charging habits and other factors. Battery capacity also decreases over the life of the vehicle, which will reduce range.

The expected mileage remaining can always be found on the right side of the Multi-Information Display (MID). As on other Toyota vehicles, this figure is an estimate determined by your driving habits, and may not accurately predict actual range if your driving pattern changes.

The state-of-charge gauge on the meter display is similar to a conventional fuel gauge. If you’d like to see a state-of-charge percentage, you can find this inside the Toyota app once your vehicle is registered. Note that this is an estimate and may vary based on your driving pattern and other factors.

No matter your preference, we recommend not allowing your state of charge to get too low, particularly on your first few drives, as bZ4X learns about your driving habits, and you become accustomed to the vehicle’s range and your available charging options.

While we hope this does not happen to you, Roadside Assistance can provide towing to your home, the nearest Toyota dealer or public charging station within 25 miles of your vehicle to help get you back on the road.

For bZ4X, Roadside Assistance has been extended from two to three years for unlimited miles. If towing bZ4X or using another roadside service, be sure to refer to the Owner's Manual for additional information about necessary towing precautions.

The charging process is similar to that of filling up a gasoline vehicle—simply insert the connector into the vehicle, and charging will begin. The charging process may vary slightly, as there are different types of charging equipment and power sources that may be used. bZ4X includes a Level 1 charging cable that can be plugged into a standard 120-volt wall outlet, and it is possible to set a charging schedule to take advantage of varying electricity rates throughout the day.

Customers who own a home may wish to purchase a Level 2 home charger to increase their charging speed. Level 2 charging operates at 240 volts and will require the installation of a 240-volt outlet in the home or hard wiring into the panel. Please use a licensed electrician for installation of a home charger.

Customers can charge in public using Level 2 chargers or Level 3 DC Fast Chargers. Public charging stations can be found through the Toyota app.

Refer to the Owner's Manual for more details on how to charge bZ4X and the available charging options.

The charge inlet door is located on the driver's-side front quarter panel.

We recommend charging as often as needed to maintain a sufficient state of charge for your anticipated trips, with consideration of available charging methods at your destinations.

Depending on the type of charger, we recommend charging to certain limits to maintain the long-term battery health.

  • AC (Level 1 and Level 2): Go ahead and charge to 100%. Once 100% is reached, it will stop charging to help preserve the battery.
  •

  • DC Fast Charging (Level 3): We recommend charging to 80% to achieve the maximum benefit of the quick charging speed. It is possible to charge to 100% with this method, but the charging rate will automatically be reduced once it reaches 80% to help preserve the battery. To help maintain long-term battery health, DC Fast Charging should be limited to two cycles of charging (Low Light to 80%) per day throughout the year.

bZ4X is equipped with a standard J1772 connector for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging, and a CCS1 connector for DC Fast Charging (Level 3).

Either DC Fast Charging or AC charging may be used at any time when charging the vehicle. Currently, bZ4X customers are not able to charge on the Tesla charging network.

bZ4X can be charged at home with the provided Level 1 charging cord or available Level 2 charging solutions, or at public charging stations with Level 2 Chargers and Level 3 DC Fast Chargers. Note that DC Fast Charging should be limited to two cycles of charging (Low Light to 80%) per day throughout the year.

The Toyota app can be used to find and initiate public charging at over 57,000 charging ports^ across the U.S., and the Toyota app can also help you pay at certain network stations (ChargePoint® and EVgo).

^As of April 2022.

bZ4X includes a Level 1 charging cord that can be plugged into any standard three-prong 120V outlet. While this is likely the most accessible charging method, it may not be suited for all drivers due to the slower charging rate. For faster charging at home, you may wish to purchase a Level 2 home charger and have it installed by a licensed electrician.

You have a number of different options for your home charger and installation, including the ChargePoint® Home Flex Level 2 charger and Qmerit installation service. Check out www.toyota.com/electrified/charging for more information.

bZ4X will charge with any network that has a J1772 (Level 2) or CCS1 (DC Fast Charging) connector, including ChargePoint®, EVgo, Greenlots, flo and EV Connect. You can find the nearest charging station near you on the Toyota app.

Currently, bZ4X customers are not able to charge on the Tesla charging network.

In optimal conditions, it can take the following amount of time to charge bZ4X:

  • Level 1 charging (at 12A): Going from Low Light to 100% can take ~50 hours, which results in an average charging rate of ~4miles/hour.
  •

  • Level 2 charging (at 32A): Going from Low Light to 100% can take ~9.5 hours, which results in an average charging rate of ~20 miles/hour.
  •

  • DC Fast Charging in ideal conditions: In AWD models, going from Low Light to 80% can take ~1 hour, which results in an average charging rate of ~3 miles/minute. In FWD models, going from Low Light to 80% in ideal conditions can take ~30 minutes, which results in an average charging rate of ~6 miles/minute.

Charging time will vary mainly based on starting battery level, the type of charge being used, outside temperature and HVAC/accessory use.

When using DC (Fast) Charging, charging times will be affected more than other charging methods based on outside temperature. As temperatures decrease below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, charging time will increase significantly. For bZ4X AWD, DC Charging will slow down further than other models when the temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and may not be possible when the temperature drops to around -4 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

To help maintain long-term battery health, DC Fast Charging should be limited to two cycles of charging (Low Light to 80%) per day throughout the year.

The Toyota app is the best resource for home-charging management. It offers great tools and insights, including vehicle range estimate, charging scheduling, tracking charging status, costs and more.

The Toyota app can also be used to find public charging locations, as well as handle charging and payment at select network stations.

You can also monitor your charging—including battery level and estimated range—through the Multi-Information Display (MID) and central touchscreen in your vehicle.

It's important to note that any estimated vehicle range calculations shown are based on previous usage patterns and may not accurately predict the vehicle range.

A bZ4X owner will first need to download the Toyota app and register their bZ4X. An EVgo account does not need to be set up separately by the customer prior to downloading and using the Toyota app.

Yes! We are excited to provide one (1) year of complimentary, unlimited public charging to bZ4X customers during their first year of ownership at all EVgo-owned and -operated public charging stations in the U.S.

Three words: convenience, fun and potential savings.

All-electric vehicles can be conveniently charged at home, overnight and on-demand, as well as at public charging stations when out and about. No more trips to the gas station needed.

They’re also fun to drive, thanks to the immediate torque response from the electric motors, as well as the smooth acceleration and quiet cabin.

Drivers won’t just save money by avoiding the gas pump, either—they may also be able to enjoy state incentives, as well as the potential long-term maintenance savings typical of an all-electric powertrain. And, as icing on the cake, driving an all-electric vehicle can also help the environment by reducing CO2 emissions.

Thanks to the use of electric motors instead of internal combustion engines, all-electric vehicles provide smooth acceleration, immediate torque response and a surprisingly quiet ride experience.

The top-mount MID is designed to help keep your eyes on the road. Positioned similarly to a Head-Up Display, it contains all the information you need, including the speedometer and charge meter.

For the optimal experience, we recommend adjusting your seat and steering wheel so the top of the steering wheel is positioned below your view of the MID.

Utilizing its electric motors, Regenerative Braking Boost Mode allows the convenience of accelerating and decelerating with just one pedal. Press down on the pedal to accelerate, and let go to decelerate.

When you're not depressing the accelerator, the vehicle will continually slow down to ~5 mph. For your safety, it is necessary to apply the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. It may also be necessary to apply the brake pedal when needing to slow down more quickly.

If you’d like to turn off Boost Mode, simply hit the Boost Mode button again, and the indicator will turn off on the MID.

X-MODE improves the vehicle’s traction off-road, by optimizing throttle control and wheelslip based on the condition selected.

X-MODE has two separate driving modes:

  • SNOW/DIRT Mode reduces the power to the wheels to help minimize wheel slippage, while controlling wheelspin in a manner that directs power to wheels that may have more grip.

  • DEEP SNOW/MUD Mode increases the power to the wheels and adjusts the traction management to allow for additional wheelspin than normal, to help build momentum getting out of deep snow or mud.

In both modes, Grip Control can be utilized to maintain a low vehicle speed on steep inclines and slippery roads without stepping on the accelerator pedal or brake pedal. This constant speed is useful when navigating tricky terrain.

Individual purchasers of a bZ4X may be able to take advantage of tax credits and other incentives. To see if incentives may apply, please visit a full list of incentives.

According to the EPA, you can expect to save at least $900 in fuel costs per year with the bZ4X. Exact cost may vary based on your local electricity rates.

Rates for charging an EV are measured in cents per kilowatt hour. Charging at home is the most cost-effective option, as one can charge their bZ4X when rates are lowest (home charging costs could range from 10 to 20 cents/kWh, depending on where you live). Public charging rates are more expensive and will vary based on time of day and the various prices charged by the different charging station operators. In general, public charging can range from 40 to 60 cents/kWh.

Like all Lithium-ion batteries, there will be some reduction in capacity over the life of the battery. For peace of mind, Toyota provides all bZ4X owners an EV Component Warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles, which includes the traction battery.

bZ4X's traction battery is virtually maintenance-free; however, it does require periodic inspections to ensure it will operate as efficiently as possible.

Taking care of your bZ4X is key to both safety and dependability. That's why we include ToyotaCare, our no cost maintenance plan, with the purchase or lease of every new Toyota for 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. 24-hour Roadside Assistance is also included for 3 years, regardless of mileage. Please reference the Warranty & Maintenance Guide for more information.
